Jindo is a small island community situated at the southwestern extremity of the Korean Peninsula. Despite its modest size, it occupies a significant position in the context of traditional culture. Global heritages like Ganggangsullae, which has been designated as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Jindo Arirang, and Sopo-geolgun Nongak all originated in Jindo. Additionally, Jindo Ssitkimgut, Namdo Deullorae, and Jindo Dasiraegi, which have been designated as national intangible heritages, exemplify traditional arts rooted in the area. The reason why a national gugak center representing the southern part of Korea is located in Jindo is precisely because of the region’s rich cultural background.
The center’s permanent performance I Love Gugak offers the opportunity to experience a free gugak performance that captures the essence of Namdo culture every Saturday. The most accomplished gugak ensemble presents a diverse array of performances, encompassing instrumental music, folk songs, and pansori, thereby further enhancing the allure of the genre. Furthermore, the themes set for each month, including "Blooming Spring Days" for March, "Life Again" for May, "Abundance" for October, and "The Beginning of Winter" for November, enhance the audience's comprehension and interest in traditional Korean music.
Upon departing the center after the performance, you will be greeted by the expansive southwestern seas of Korea as a gift bestowed upon the viewer. A complimentary shuttle service is available for passengers before and after the performance. The route encompasses the Jindo-eup Office, Gugak Center, Osan Elementary School, and Hoedong (Mystery Road), making it even more convenient to enjoy the cultural experience.
